Southern Company Strategic Projects Manager - Metro Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia

JOB SUMMARY

This is a new position for the Grid Transformation team in Power Delivery. The role will report to the Grid Transformation Manager and have a dotted line reporting relationship to the Grid Investment Program Director.

Position is responsible for support and implementation of broad Grid Transformation strategy, regulatory and internal communications and compliance, and leadership of strategic grid transformation projects including a project management team. These functions will enable successful coordination and execution of strategic business efforts among Transmission, Distribution, Generation Planning & Development, Resource Planning, Regulatory Affairs, and Legal in addition to other ancillary stakeholders.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills )

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field is preferred.

A minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience with full performance management responsibilities is preferred.

Strong transmission experience is required, and distribution experience is also preferred.

Knowledge of the transmission system including key functions such as planning, design, and operations along with familiarity with the Grid Investment Program are preferred.

Familiarity with project management principles and regulatory processes is a plus.

Demonstrated leadership on projects involving multiple work groups and departments is required, and experience interfacing with and influencing partner organizations is preferred.

Strong communication and presentation skills required – both internal and external audiences including senior executives.

Strong analytical skills to evaluate progress, identify problem areas, evaluate alternatives and determine viable solutions.

Demonstrated experience leading team efforts and resolving conflict. Cross-functional experience is a plus, including working across operating companies.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Specify major duties performed by the job and % of time spent on duties.

Represent broad Georgia Power Company (GPC) Transmission functions in Customer Choice and new generation development/planning discussions to ensure all transmission considerations for projects are identified and addressed early and effectively. (30%)

 Coordinate transmission input for generation development and Customer Choice projects as needed including collaboration across cross-functional shareholder groups such as Transmission Planning, Interconnections Planning, Operations, Area Planning, Equipment Services, and Others.

 Support other strategic transmission project needs such as solar corridors and generation retirements as needed.

Lead development and coordination of regulatory communications related to Transmission and Distribution including, but not limited to, data request response preparation, witness preparation efforts, and regulatory narrative and strategy input for regulatory filings. (50%)

 Lead a team that coordinates closely with business unit leaders to ensure regulatory compliance needs are met.

 Coordinate with Grid Investment Program Director, Regulatory Affairs, and Legal on Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) and PSC Staff or other external engagement to effectively support the Grid Investment Program.

 Coordinate closely with other GPC and Southern Company Services (SCS) Transmission and Distribution organizations for other regulatory-driven communications and reporting requirements and assist as needed.

Support Grid Transformation Manager to lead special project efforts including federal funding strategy and

R&D coordination for new technology and pilot opportunities. (10%)

Provide clear communication and strategic updates for executive leadership as needed to ensure appropriate support and to remove barriers for successful project execution. (5%)

Inform and influence process and education/training development as needed including coordination with peers across Transmission, Distribution, and Planning organizations. (5%)
