Position Summary

Reporting to the Billing Claims Manager, the Billing Specialist is responsible for collecting, posting, and managing account payments, submitting claims, and following up with insurance companies.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

• Prepares and submits clean claims to various insurance companies

• Answers questions from patients, clerical staff, and insurance companies

• Preauthorization’s for procedures

• Reviews accounts for possible assignment and makes recommendations to the Director of billing

• Conducts self in accordance with ZHC’s employee handbook

• Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations

• Performs other duties as assigned

  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of medical billing/collection practices

• Knowledge of computer programs

• Knowledge of basic medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices

• Ability to operate a computer and basic office equipment

• Skill in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner

• Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees and the public

• Learn and apply the trauma informed care principles with the scope of the position

• Must be well organized and detail oriented

  Education, Training, and Experience

• Associate degree in related field

• Minimum two years’ experience in a community health setting

• Two years’ experience as a medical billing specialist

• Experience working with community service agencies

• Knowledge of Microsoft Office, keyboarding, and use of electronic medical records

  As a condition of employment, we require that all staff are fully vaccinated against flu.
