Kaiser Permanente Ophthalmic Technician I in San Diego, California
Job Summary:
Under indirect supervision, performs a variety of standard diagnostic procedures & tests on patients, in accordance w/ department protocol, to assist the ophthalmologist in the diagnosis & treatment of eye diseases & vision disorders. Follows Quality of Service Standards, follows Universal Precautions.

Performance of fluorescein angiography (FA)
Perform fluorescein & iris angiography
Performs fundus & slip lamp photography
Develops black & white opthalmic photographs, maintains photographic suite, monitors development of color films by outside vendor
Performs ICG fluorescein digital imaging
Conducts visual field testing using the Goldman perimeter & Humphrey automated perimeter
Takes axial length measurements (A-scans) also performs B-scans
Performs slit lamp applanation & advanced tonometry
Performs fundus (stero disc) photography & slit lamp applanation tonometry
Performs keratometry; measures corneal curvature on intraocular lens patients
Performs corneal endothelial cell count using specular microscope; derives accurate cell counts from photographs
Checks visual acuity, uses lensometer & examines patient for abnormalities of color vision
Obtains patient history information: conducts patient education; records appropriate progress information, reports abnormal findings to physician
Arranges patient examination & treatment areas; prepares patients for examinations, treatment or surgery; dilates patient eyes and/or places medicated eye drops into patient eyes per department protocol
Initiates chart requests & assist w/ informed consents & completes required documentation
Serves as first assist in O.R. and/or minor procedure room, prepares & passes instruments during eye standards
Maintains professional image, equipment accuracy & safety, quality assurance & quality of service standards
Establishes & maintains courteous, cooperative relations w/ patients, physicians & other nursing, service representatives personnel
Follows Universal Precautions
Reports incidents of failure to follow procedures to Department Administrator or designee
Participates in Departments Quality Assurance activities
Performs other related duties as required

Basic Qualifications:
Experience
• Two (2) years practical experience as Ophthalmic Medical Assistant OR one (1) year training/practical experience as an Ophthalmic Technician
• General knowledge of ophthalmic diseases, symptoms, diagnosis & treatment in order to carry out function noted above
• Demonstrated ability to operate/maintain ophthalmic equipment to perform duties noted above
• Strong written & verbal skills for patient history assessment, medical record documentation & patient/family
Education
•Knowledge of & skill at providing basic CPR required
• Equipment Utilized: Medical Office, Special Procedures Room (optional)
License, Certification, Registration

Preferred Qualifications:
• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred; but not required
Certified Ophthalmic Assistant or higher
