Job Description

This position is a 9-month position associated with responsibilities as Costume Shop Manager and Instructor. This position is located on the main Stephenville campus. Work Hours: Mon-Fri: 8AM - 5PM or as work requirements indicate. Requires the ability to teach and/or work remotely at the University’s discretion.

Responsibilities:

40% Teaching:

  • Teach Stagecraft II, Costume Design and Construction, and Practicum as needed. Supervise daily labs

  • Develop, implement and review effective teaching /learning processes, incorporating appropriate methodology, technology and other tools; Remain current in discipline and update course content when appropriate to reflect current levels of student knowledge in the discipline; Develop a system for ongoing evaluation of both teaching and learning, including expectations of student competency and student learning outcomes; Exhibit a mature view of the academic discipline; Work in partnership with immediate supervisor through a formal system of evaluation of instruction to identify strengths and weaknesses and identify professional development activities to improve student learning.

    60% Costume Shop Manager and Costume Design

  • Design or oversee the costume design and implementation of all Theatre area productions

  • Supervise the construction of costumes for all Theatre area productions

  • Budget and purchase all costume materials for Theatre area productions

  • Supervise and guide student designers and evaluate students’ skill level to assign projects/tasks accordingly to improve sewing and problem-solving skills to include, but not limited to: measuring, laundry and ironing, cleaning and organization, garment care and storage, hand sewing, machine sewing, patterning, draping, costume crafts, and fitting etiquette

  • Oversee and train a staff of student workers for the Costume Shop

  • Schedule student worker’s costume shop hours; instructing student staff in the technical aspects of costume construction and the proper and safe use of associated machinery.

  • Supervise students while they are constructing costumes , correcting deficiencies, evaluating the students' work.

  • Design costumes for theatre productions to include: read-throughs, rehearsals, research, plots and show, paperwork, costume sketches/renderings, swatch fabrics, pulls/patterns/making costumes, conducting fittings/marks alterations, attends production meetings.

  • Maintain shop equipment and make recommendations for repair needs and purchasing.

  • Maintain costumes shop database, inventories and organize stock and supplies.

  • Handle incoming and outgoing donations.

  • Gather actor measurements and store in database.

  • Prepare alterations, schedule fittings, handle laundry and dry cleaning, draping, patterning, and sewing costumes.

  • Oversee tech weekends, dress rehearsals, wardrobe crews, and strike.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA in Drama, Theatre, Costume Design, or an equivalent degree in field of theatre practice.

  • 5 Years of program management experience including supervisory experience.

  • Experience as a seamstress or experience sewing/stitching.

  • Network of professional colleagues and connections.

  • Preferably, the candidate is still actively working in the industry.
