Summary: The VLD Transportation Manager will plan, direct, and coordinate the transportation operations within the VLD location. The VLD Transportation Manager will be a proactive thinker in continuing to embrace the mindset of thorough planning and continuous improvement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Manages activities related to dispatching, routing, and tracking transportation vehicles.

  • Plans, organizes and manages the work of subordinate staff to ensure that the work is accomplished in a manner consistent with organizational requirements.

  • Ensures & promotes safe work activities by conducting safety audits, attending safety meetings, and meeting with individual staff members.

  • Negotiates and authorizes contracts with outside trucking companies and monitors contract fulfillment.

  • Conducts annual driver observations. Observation includes riding with each driver to observe driving performance and safety performance. Develops action plan for improvement when necessary.

  • Conducts accident investigations to ascertain damage, liability and submit claims. Responsible for coordination of investigation and claims from branch plants to insurance carrier.

  • Interprets and ensures compliance with transportation regulations, safety regulations, and company policies and procedures for workers.

  • Manages departmental bid process.

  • Oversees the payroll and bonus process.

  • Assists with the selection of new warehouses bringing to light transportation issues with the sight snow removal, parking, maintenance repairs, and the food safety audits.

  • Reports safety, food safety, quality and Good Manufacturing Practices problems to personnel with authority to initiate action.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include coaching and developing staff, interviewing, hiring; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

    Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED;

  • Bachelor’s Degree from four-year College or university; or

  • Seven to ten years’ related experience; or

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Language Skills:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

    Mathematical Skills:

    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

    Reasoning Ability:

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

    Computer Skills:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word software.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • CDL class A license required.
